IRRITROL FAQ'S
Why is Irritrol Dual Function, or 2-in-1?
Irritrol is a 2-in- 1 dual function endodontic irrgiant because it disinfects and removes the smear layer.
What’s in Irritrol?
Irritrol’s components can be described in two sections: Disinfection and Smear layer removal.
• Disinfection is accomplished by the combination of chlorhexidine (chx) and a proprietary blend of surfactants. This combination allows for 99.99% disinfection.
• Smear Layer removal is accomplished by a chelating agent, which removes the inorganic materials, and another proprietary blend of surfactants to remove the organic material. This enables Irritrol to remove the smear layer less aggressively than 17% EDTA, causing less demineralization.
In terms of disinfection, how does this compare to CHX?
Irritrol disinfected 99.99% of bacteria vs CHX which disinfected 25% of the bacteria during the same time period.
Traditional irrigants typically use concentrated solutions of EDTA (17%) to remove smear layer resulting in highly demineralized dentin. With its proprietary blend of surfactants and chelators that work together in synergy, Irritrol can accomplish highly efficient removal of smear layer without excessive demineralization. Irritrol is not an overly “aggressive” irrigant as it does not contain high concentrations of EDTA that can chelate away calcium ions leaving the dentinal surface severely eroded.
• Gently shake or agitate the IRRITROL bottle prior to dispensing. Avoid creating excessive bubbles or foam inside container.
• Pour the solution into a smaller container prior to withdrawal into a syringe.
• Attach an irrigation needle to syringe and draw solution into syringe.
• Use up to 6.15% NaOCl for irrigation prior to use of IRRITROL.
• As with any final irrigation solution, rinse out the NaOCl with sterile water or saline.
• Remove cap from irrigation needle. Insert the needle into the canal being treated. Place the needle tip safely in canal (no more than 2 mm from apex). Express solution into canal.
• Irrigate for 60-90 seconds.
• Remove IRRITROL from canal and dispose.
• Dry the canal. Seal and obturate as normal.
Irritrol is green to ensure easy identification for the dentist and assistant during the irrigation procedure.
